“Jewelry is normal.” If you happened to be on TikTok at all over the past few days, you will probably recognize this phrase, which just became infamous during University of Alabama rush (sorority recruitment). “Bama RushTok” suddenly went viral. Videos of PNMs (potential new members) detailing their outfits during each round of recruitment were all over TikTok and viewers from around the world became invested in the entire recruitment process. In just one week, these videos racked up a cumulative 68 million views. Audiences followed these sorority hopefuls as they journeyed through the entire recruitment process. Each day of recruitment required a different dress code, and the OOTD videos which detailed their outfits were everywhere. Instant influencers were established, and satires ran rampant. While scrolling through the OOTD gamut, viewers saw a variety of brightly colored outfits from the likes of Lululemon, LoveShackFancy, mixed with Amazon, Target, and Shein.
Along with these well known brands, we heard a few less common pairings: The first was Pant Store. To the surprise of many, the Pant Store, which has been in business since 1950, sells more than pants (they have tons of cute dresses). The second repeated callout was the phrase “jewelry is normal”.
“What is ‘Normal’?” “Is ‘Normal’ a store, too?”, some commenters asked. Of course the actual meaning of this statement was simply that the jewelry was something they regularly wear.
With all the planning that goes into recruitment and putting together the perfect outfit, having those go-to jewelry favorites that can be worn daily without thinking twice is a true testament to a staple item. It also serves as a nice reminder to the viewer planning for fall 2021 outfits: Establish your normal jewelry. A diamond necklace is a classic and will make any outfit that much more polished. Whether you’re on a Zoom call or headed somewhere IRL, a necklace can instantly tie your look together.
