Reformation: Sustainable Fashion At Its Finest

Do you love Reformation? The sustainable fashion brand launched in 2009 with one goal: make fashion less wasteful.

I first learned about them in 2016 and was instantly drawn to their classic-meets-modern silhouettes and cute prints and patterns. They have an impressive “it girl” following, with everyone from Taylor Swift to Karlie Kloss amongst their fanbase. And their pieces sell out quickly. They’re based in LA and have multiple locations in the Los Angeles area, as well as in NYC and SF (hey, Ref, we’re waiting for you in Seattle…). And though the price points are steeper than the high-street price points you may be used to seeing, it’s due to everything being sustainably made. Their fabrics are a mix of previously produced deadstsock, repurposed vintage, and sustainably-produced materials.

From their site:

“We think Tencel is the holy grail of fabrics. Made by Austrian company Lenzing, Tencel is a semi-synthetic fiber with properties almost identical to cotton. It’s part of the Rayon family, made from renewable plant materials.

Tencel is manufactured from Eucalyptus trees, which grow fast and thick on low-grade land. It takes just half an acre to grow enough trees for one ton of Tencel fiber. Cotton needs at least five times as much land—plus, it must be good quality farmland. Tencel production is done without the use of pesticides or insecticides (unlike its dirty cousin, cotton).

While Eucalyptus trees don’t need irrigation, water is still used to process the pulp and turn it into Tencel fiber. Lenzing estimates its water use at 155 gallons per pound of fiber, which is 80% less than cotton.

Tencel has a closed loop production process, meaning over 99% of the non-toxic solvent is recycled and pushed back into the system instead of being flushed out as wastewater. And don’t just take our word for it: Tencel fibers are  certified by the European eco-label Oeko Tex 100 as containing low levels of manufacturing chemicals and byproducts.”

It’s a rare thing to find a clothing company with sustainability at its core. It’s even rarer to find one who can churn out so many cute pieces in about a month, from concept to creation.

Here are the Reformation pieces I’m loving right now. Unfortunately some of them are already sold out in my size, but that won’t stop me from sharing them here. They’re all so classic and chic. Let me know which ones you like best.
