Capsule Closet: Tops

capsule wardrobe top essentials you need stylish french

Tops are the most prevalant pieces in my closet, which makes narrowing them down a challenge. I have been out of town for the past week and traveling always forces me to narrow down my closet; what goes in the suitcase are generally very versatile pieces that can be mixed and matched and dressed up or down. Think: Cotton black or white tops and comfortable blouses or sweaters, depending on the season. The trick is to use jackets, jewelry, and scarves to create different looks – because if Lizzie McGuire taught us anything, it’s that we don’t want to be outfit repeaters.

But actually, I disagree with Kate Sanders’ snarky stance: I love repeating outfits! If it worked once, why not wear it again? That’s the basis of a true capsule closet. Not doing so just feeds into consumerism and eats at our wallets.

So, let’s get to a roundup of the investment pieces that you can wear over and over again. They don’t have to be expensive, but they should be quality.

As I put this together, I came up with the following list of categories to check off as you create your own capsule closet:

    1) Classic white button-up
    2) Black tops (short and long sleeved, depending on the season. Add a turtleneck for extra points.)
    3) Statement (examples: a unique design or a crop top)
    4) Striped
    5) Solid – in whatever colors are most flattering on you.
    5) Chambray
    6) Flannel
    7) Nude/cream top
    8) Knit sweater (see my favorites here)

Let me know what you think in the comments. To see all the tops, don’t miss the little grey arrow on the middle right of the box below:

Sidenote: In the picture above, I’m wearing a Banana Republic sweater – which I was so flattered to discover that they pinned to their Pinterest board: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/242420392420780945/
Check it out! 🙂
