6 Things to Do in Seattle this Christmas

Christmas really is the most wonderful time of the year. In Seattle, there’s so much to do – from Pike Place to Bellevue Square, the city just lights up! I’ve lived here my whole life and wanted to share a list of some of my favorite Christmas destinations, new and old.

  1. Bellevue Botanical Gardens – Walk through this winter wonderland and be awed by the beautiful display of half a million lights. The photo below is from when I went two years ago and it doesn’t do justice to how amazing the setup is in person. This year is supposed to be better than ever and I can’t wait to see it! Tip: Be sure to dress warm and wear comfy walking shoes. $5; Children 10 and under are free.Christmas Bellevue-Botanical-Gardens-d'Lights
  2. Gingerbread Village – Ok guys, here’s your chance to take your Instagram food art to the next level: Stop by the downtown Seattle Sheraton and see the giant gingerbread masterpieces lining the lobby. Each one is more intricate than the next. Stop in for a break between shopping. This year’s theme is Star Wars and I’m definitely nerding out about that! Free; donations benefit JDRF.
  3. Westlake Center – From the tree lighting to the carousel, Westlake Center feels so Christmasy. It’s in the heart of downtown and just a few blocks east of Pike Place. Definitely a must during the season! Free.
  4. Snowflake Lane – Each night at 7 p.m. between Black Friday and Christmas Eve, Bellevue Way turns into a magical, snowy street parade filled with music and lights. This is a very popular event, so expect crowds. Since it’s right outside the mall, it’s a great way to cap off a shopping trip with friends. Or plan it around a dinner date and dine at one of The Bellevue Collection’s awesome restaurants. We have been going every year since Snowflake Lane started and it just keeps getting better and better. Free.
  5. Candy Cane Lane – Searching for the most festive neighborhood light display in the city? Look no further than Candy Cane Lane. This has always been one of my favorite destinations. I would go both with my family as a child, and with friends when I was in college at UW. 23 brick houses join together to create a stunning display. Since 1949, Ravenna-area Candy Cane Lane has been an iconic part of Seattle’s Christmas scene. Walk or drive down the windy road and enjoy the beautiful lights and music. 21st Ave NE off of Ravenna Blvd  – Free. Canned food donations are welcomed.
  6. Christmas Ship Festival – Gather the family and spend the evening aboard the Christmas Ship, boating through Lake Washington and Union. What makes this boat ride unique is that it stops to hear beach carolers along the way. So fun! You can also join the fun from the shore. $39/adults; $35/seniors; $21.50/kids 4 – 12; Free for kids 3 and under.Christmas-Ship-SeattlePhoto credit: Argosy Cruises

Enjoy celebrating the season!
